Analysis of the Gender Gap in Nuclear Support

- Preliminary Report -

Overview

There is a gender gap in nuclear support around the world that negatively impacts the nuclear industry’s social license, policy stability, and workforce. By understanding the causes of this gap, the nuclear industry can better address it.

This preliminary gender report has been developed by Radiant Energy Group, in collaboration with the IAEA, using data from the Public Attitudes toward Clean Energy (PACE) international index, the world’s largest publicly-released study on what people think about nuclear energy.

Initial Insights

1. This is a nuclear-specific problem

The gender gap in support tends to be significantly greater for nuclear than for other clean energies.

2. Safety concerns matter but not how or as much as commonly thought

More women say they are concerned about nuclear safety than men. However, concern among men is often still high, views on nuclear safety are as important to women as men and are rarely the main driver of overall nuclear support.

3. Left-right politics impacts women’s nuclear support less than men’s

While more women align with left-wing political parties than men and left-aligned people show lower support for nuclear’s use, we find that women’s nuclear support is more independent of their political support than it is for men.

Highlights

Next Steps

We hope to publish a full gender report that would build on the existing findings with analysis of numerous other potential drivers of the gender gap in nuclear support, including nuclear knowledge,  sources of education,  motherhood, conformity pressures, uncertainty, views on nuclear’s emissions, reliability, and cost, and views on climate change and the environment, and more.
